Alibi bar/club replaces Jackrabbit, which was buzzing a few years ago but failed to find its crowd (to know why, read the review I wrote about it here).

The team behind Alibi combines the owners of some of the most popular clubs in Jakarta (X2/Domain, Embassy (already closed)). It is a rather beautiful venue, impressive with a dark vibe and high ceiling. The bar is long, with sofas and tables occupying all the way to the DJ, which is slightly elevated from the crowd. It should be a nice venue for special DJs performance, much more intimate than X2 in particular.

The sound system is brand-new and top quality: same new speakers than in Stadium. Excellent sound delivery, that's Indonesia's at its best.
Music that night was Vintage Rn'B/Hip Hop from the 90s, which seems to be the new fashion with the mature crowd (30-40). It brings something different from the usual dance/house music played in clubs with a younger crowd. Unfortunately, there were more waiters than clients the night we went there - even though it was a Saturday night. That was a pity.

Staff was extremely kind overall. Food was good and not so expensive: The Club Sandwich@70K for instance. Local crowd only. Sophisticated, and mature as mentioned before: above 30yrs old. I suspect that the crowd that night were acquaintances of the owners though.

Major turn-off: The place was empty and had no party vibe at all. I hope Alibi won't meet with the same fate as its predecessor, but if they do not improve the marketings and events, I don't see how they could survive very long... I see that they had a few good DJs coming since they opened and I think they need to keep them coming until the place is established...With a solid group behind it, I'm confident they will succeed.

Bottom Line: Will not return, too remote and not enough energy.

Longer Review: Thanks for the recommendation. I visited Alibi the on a Friday around 11pm. The venue has a cool appearance and the sound system was adequate. Actually, I think the volume was just about perfect for the size of the venue which is a hard thing to find in Jakarta. The DJ was competent using the standard Mac setup. The venue itself is small but has very high ceilings. There was not much of a crowd so I think this is more of the kind of place that people should show up with friends and not necessarily expect to leave with new ones. There is an upstairs area but I did not explore. The bill came out to more than the menu price for drinks, however we received some food that wasn't on the bill so it worked out okay. Bathrooms were clean and had a sufficient number of stalls. The entrance to the building was difficult to locate so a map would be helpful. The website for the club is incomplete at this time. Small dance floor, probably good enough for 20 people. If you're meeting friends, this wouldn't be a bad place to start the night but don't expect anything like X2, Immigrant, or even Red Square which I hesitate to recommend to anyone these days except to say that you went there.
