Masters Sports Bar (Bellagio - Mega Kuningan)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Masters Sports Bar and Restaurant is located on the ground floor of Bellagio Mall in Mega Kuningan. The place looks unassuming from the outside and you may have already walked past without noticing it. Should you decide to step inside, you'll be surprised to find a spacious 350m2 area with a long wooden bar, a 50-seat dining area, 2 professional electronic dart boards and 5 full-size tournament pool tables. Unlike the trendy venues nearby like Loewy or Basque, Masters has a much more laid-back atmosphere, perfect if you are looking for a quiet place to chill after work. Later in the evening, it gets a bit more loud and busy, especially on Friday and Saturday as they have a live band.

It is one of the few dedicated sports bars in Jakarta and it features at least 8 different TVs, including two massive HD projector screens near the entrance. It must be among the largest ones I've seen anywhere in Asia. If there is any live sports event in the world, you are pretty sure you can watch it in Masters: Football, Rugby, AFL, Racing, NBA, NFL, MLB, etc. They may also change their schedule to make sure you can watch special events like the Superbowl, the Olympics or the Fifa World Cup. Some screens also have music videos from an eclectic playlist of over 600 titles (pop, rock, Top 40, etc).

One of the particularities of Masters Sports Bar is that it is owned by a group of Jakarta expats who each have their own day jobs. I've met a few of them and it was refreshing to see how passionate they are. They come from different backgrounds and nationalities (Swedish, Indonesian, Malaysian, Nepalese, Denmark and Irish), but they share the same goal: Having the most friendly and comfortable bar for them to meet, drink and watching sports. The result is that Masters feels particularly homey and that a lot of their customers are regulars (sometimes with their families).

The crowd is quite diverse, but I would say there are about 50% expats and 50% Indonesians, most of whom are over 30 years old.

One of the best reasons to visit Masters is to play billiard. There is one table near the entrance and four more in the back. For casual players, you can use them for free as long as you make a purchase. Some competitive players train there as well, including several teams that participate in the Jakarta Pool League. There are seats all around the pool tables so it is nice to just watch (better) people play as well. Masters arranges pool events & tournaments on a regular basis, you can find more information about this on their very busy Facebook page (see below).

Regarding the food, they serve all the traditional pub fare for a reasonable price considering the area.

Light meals, soups, sandwiches, salads and snacks cost about Rp50,000 to Rp80,000 (Nachos, Wings, Spring Rolls, Wedges, etc...). Thai and Indonesian food cost between Rp50,000 and Rp100,000. Pizzas and Western main courses cost between Rp70,000 to Rp150,000. Their imported steaks (from US and Australia) are a bit more expensive as usual in Indonesia (starting at Rp200,000).

They also have lunch specials on their pies, hotdogs and Indonesian food with a fixed price of Rp50,000++ from 11am to 3pm.

The beer is rather cheap, starting at Rp38,000 for a Prost 33cl. You can see below the whole beer menu with happy hour prices (HH = 4pm to 9pm):
Cocktails and hard liquor glasses are priced between Rp70,000 and Rp90,000 per unit while a bottle of Jack Daniels will cost you only Rp1,000,000.

Every Thursday evening is Ladies Night (from 5pm to 8pm) with a free flow house pours for girls.

De Leila (Arabic Nightclub) - FX Sudirman

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Update 24th October 2016: 17 Moroccan prostitutes were arrested in De Leila over the weekend, yet strangely no newspaper was mentioning the name of the club. This is the review I wrote about the venue in March 2016:

De Leila is an arabic nightclub located on the 8th floor of FX Sudirman, where Privé used to be. It is a popular party spot for tourists from the Middle East and particularly Saudis, Qatari and Emiratis. You have a few other nationalities such as Egyptians, Iranians, Turkish and Omanis. Even though most customers are Muslims, alcohol and prostitutes are widely available.

I had reviewed De Leila before when it was still in Putra Jasa on Jalan Gatot Subroto. You can see the original review here: De Leila Gatot Subroto.

Do you need a hotel near De Leila? Harris FX is walking distance and the price is affordable. You can compare the prices here: HotelsCombined.

The new De Leila was opened a year ago early 2015. It is still partly owned by the Ahmad Fahmy family (also behind Tanamur).

It is now more modern and spacious, with an upmarket feel. I have to warn you though that is a a place of prostitution, with at least 50 freelance working girls from Indonesia, China and Morocco (yes there are Moroccan prostitutes in Jakarta!). You will notice that many girls are plump while some are borderline obese. Many are very pretty though, better than in BATS, Blok M or CJs.

The music in De Leila is Arabic, either from their live band or from the DJ. It is best to book a sofa so you can enjoy the show with the best possible view. You can order shisha as well.

There is also a mezzanine with brand new pool tables and a second bar. There was no belly dancers when I visited but there are regular performances.

The entrance fee is Rp125,000 and it includes one free draught beer.

I shot this video inside of their beautiful and sexy belly dancer (apparently from Uzbekistan):

The Pallas (Lounge, Restaurant and Event Space)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
The Pallas is a new restaurant, lounge and event space that opened in Fairground in SCBD. It is owned by the All In Group which is also behind Fable (in the same building), Odysseia and Mirror Nightclub in Bali.

It overtook the lease of Potato Head Garage that closed down a few months ago. They've freshened up the place and added their own gothic touch (owls, stained glass, alcoves), but it still look similar as before. It is more upmarket and clean though, it might be sign that the hipster trend is fading.

My understanding is that the name Pallas is an Indonesian play on the word "Palace". It makes sense as it is a rather luxurious venue that specializes on Indonesian food.

The food is not the most interesting aspect of the Pallas. You can get it for much cheaper in any food court actually. Instead, you should visit it when they have special events. They've had a good start so far by bringing 2 "famous" international DJs within their first month of opening (Tay James, Aly & Fila).

They also have regular events: Live band on Monday, Live Harpist on Tuesday, Soul Rn'B on Wednesday, Live Piano on Thursday. You can see the updated schedule on their social media accounts below.

¿Por Que No? - Tapas Bar - Jakarta

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
¿Por Que No? was opened in 2015 as a Spanish tapas bar and restaurant in the neighborhood of Menteng, at the northern end of Jalan Rasuna Said. While the food is decent but definitely not haute cuisine, it is an interesting venue to hangout and drink before party. Cocktails are just above Rp100,000 net and Bintang at Rp50,000 net, which is not that bad considering the central location. The food is more expensive and the portions small (obviously, small like tapas).

There are 2 different areas, indoor and outdoor. Outdoor is a small rooftop where regular events are organized. In particular, they have some techno nights that attract a young and fun crowd. You also have jazz nights, open mic nights, etc. Check their Facebook page or Instagram below to get their latest schedule.

Overall: A bit of a random, messy place that I recommend to younger people (18-30) to get some drinks before moving somewhere else. You can share some tapas in the process as well. It is quite popular with foreigners, particularly interns.

Opening Hours:
From Tuesday to Sunday from 12pm to 12am (until 2am on Friday and Saturday)

Prohibition (Jakarta) - Speakeasy and Live Jazz

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Prohibition is a restaurant, bar and speakeasy lounge located in Senayan Arcadia, just next to Plaza Senayan. It was opened by some of of the people behind Black Cat, Hacienda, Red Square and Boutique KTV. As the name suggests, the whole venue has a 1920s' prohibition theme from the interior design to the staff uniforms and the menu.

The Restaurant: Chicago-Style Chop House
Prohibition specializes in broiled meats, a cooking method similar to grilling. These include chicken, salmon, pork, mamb, and imported US beef. The prices range from just over Rp100,000 to Rp400,000 for the 200-g prime rib-eye steak. If you come with a small group, it's a good idea to share their 600-g "gangster" meat platter for just over Rp1M.
Gangster Meat Platter
If you are on a budget, they also serve a variety of pasta dishes for less than Rp100,000. You can see the full menu here: Menu Prohibition Jakarta.

The Bar and the Secret Speakeasy Lounge
I visited Prohibition a few months ago but it is only recently that I've discovered about their secret room, hidden behind the bar. You can see the access from this video I took:
They were actually the first ones to initiate the trend of speakeasies in Jakarta, later followed by places like Monty's, Lola, Proof and Hemingway. Prohibition is the one with the best design, ambience and music.

If you are a jazz enthusiast, I recommend you to visit on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday for live music with a different band every night.

The current schedule includes some of the top jazz artists in Indonesia: Ahmad Ananda and Friends, Donny Joesran and Swing Machine, Barry Likumahuwa Quarted, Taufan Goenarso Quintet or Abe Simpson & Friends. Check their facebook page for the latest events: Live Band Prohibition.

The atmosphere in the the speakeasy is dim-lighted and intimate. It's a great place for a small gathering with friends or for a date (especially if you have a dinner in the restaurant before). It is also walking distance from X2 and Domain nightclubs.

If you need a sofa or a table, you must buy at least a bottle during weekdays. On weekends, you have a minimum spend between Rp2,500,000 and Rp5,000,000. They also have private rooms for karaokes, meetings or private party with a minimum charge of Rp10,000,000.

Their drink menu is very complete with a long list of cocktails and premium alcohol. While the prices are slightly more expensive than average, the drinks served are pretty heavy in alcohol unlike other bars in Jakarta. Also, I liked the concept of their 250 ml bootleg bottles as it saves you from buying a whole bottle if you just plan on having a short night out. It also makes it easier to try a few samples of different spirits. Finally, they have a cigar menu (you can check it as well on their website).

H Gourmet and Vibes (Senopati)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →

H Gourmet and Vibes is a new trendy restaurant and bar that opened last year in the Senopati area. As I'm currently on a diet, I didn't try the food which consists mostly of fat American dishes (grilled meats, burgers, melted cheese, specialty french fries, sandwiches, etc). If you are skinny or not particularly concerned about eating healthy, I'm sure many items are as delicious as fried cheese with mayo can be.

My main interest was to test the bar. I had heard many praises from friends and I wanted to see for myself.

H Gourmet and Vibes is in brand new building which seems to be still under construction. Hipsters probably love that. The best thing about the place are the large windows that let you see the nearby trees with the skyscrapers in the background. In particular, you have an original clock-shaped window just behind the bar. The rest is your typical vintage-industrial design that many new venues in Jakarta I've chosen to copy from one another. It looks particularly neat in H though and it certainly explains part of its success.
Clock-shaped window in H Bar
The crowd is almost entirely made of Indonesians, most of them in their early 20s. It is the same kind that hangs out in Lucy in the Sky. The place is full most evenings, especially from Wednesday night until Saturday. You should book a table in advance on those nights.

They have live music (acoustic cover bands) followed by DJs from Tuesday to Saturday night. The music is mainstream, popular hits, unless during special events. It is worth noting that the official owners of H Gourmet and Vibes are the singer Vidi Aldiano and his dad, the event organizer Harry Kiss.
Overall: H Gourmet is new, crowded and happening. I'm too old to hang out there, but if you are under 30 and you like to party with educated, well-behaved people, this is one of Jakarta's current hot spot.

The staff didn't seem to be very friendly. One of the waiters was even quite unpleasant to deal with.

Opening Hours:
From Monday to Thursday from 11am to 12am.
From Friday to Saturday from 11am to 3am.
Sunday from 11am to 1am

3rd Avenue (Senopati)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
3rd Avenue is a bar located on the third floor of the building where Colette & Lola and Wilshire are. It used to be called Yeyo. The design is inspired by Art Deco and, from the words of the owner, the movie Gatsby.

Their prices are rather affordable for Senopati: Cocktails cost around Rp100k net and bottles Rp1M-Rp1,5M net. Best nights are on Wednesday and Friday (live band) or Saturday (DJ). It is sparsely crowded the rest of the week. Most customers are regulars from the same community, particularly Indonesians in their 30s who studied abroad.

Savanna Rooftop Bar and Restaurant (Kelapa Gading)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Savanna is a brand new rooftop bar and restaurant that opened in Kelapa Gading in March 2016. It is one of the nicest venues in the area to have a drink.

It seems one of the owners is Dada Hartoto Hardikusumo, an heir to the shipping company Andhika Lines. She was the Chef of Moya's Spanish Restaurant and she was also involved in other Spanish venues (Gusto in Epicentrum and Que Rico Hamburguesa in Kemang).

They have regular events such as live music and DJs. Friday night is Rn'B, otherwise it's more house and EDM. They also have stand up comedians on Saturday.

LOLA Lounge (Gunawarman - Senopati - Jakarta)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Lola is a new bar and lounge that just opened in December 2015 near Senopati, on Jalan Gunawarman. It is a bit hidden, below their sister Japanese restaurant FŪJIN. It is owned by the Biko Group which is also behind Beer Garden.

They are following the worldwide trend for speakeasy bars, started in Jakarta by venues like Prohibition, Artoz, Bauhaus and Nip & Dram. Since last year, you also have Hemingway and Proof.

LOLA is probably one of the best in terms of atmosphere. It looks a bit like La Favela in Bali for the dark, almost religious, latino-chic décor (though much less sophisticated). You also have some elements that resemble Potato Head Garage in SCBD.

The crowd and the music is hip and trendy. If you are a bit hipster or attracted to anything alternative, you will probably enjoy it. If you are a tourist or in Jakarta for just a few days, I think it's best to avoid though. It's quite hard to meet people and in particular girls.

They serve Southern food and specialize in Tiki cocktails. For the live music/DJ/event schedule, please check their intagram: Lola - Espiritu Y Libacion. This is also where I took the pictures.

Note: It is totally unrelated to Colette and Lola on Jalan Senopati.

Nuage (Whiz Prime, Kelapa Gading, Jakarta)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Nuage is the bar of the Whiz Prime Hotel in Kelapa Gading. It is in the same location as Level 5 karaoke and Portable Kitchen and Lounge. It is rather basic, with cheap chairs and cabanas around a large swimming pool. It is technically a rooftop bar, but only on the third floor of the building so don't expect a spectacular view.

The whole complex is owned by the infamous Stadium group (Malioboro, King Cross, Exodus, Nebula). Yet, there is nothing really kinky going on in Nuage. This might explain why the place is not so busy compared to the other ones.

In spite of being quiet, they have enough budget to pay a team of resident DJs as well as a regular live band. In general, the DJs will play a mix of Rn'B, EDM and Top 40. Wednesday is 80s and 90s favorites and Friday live acoustic rock. Once in a while they have ex-Stadium DJs. You can get more information about their schedule on their Instagram account below.

Overall: You can check Nuage if you stay nearby, but otherwise it is not really special. It is actually best during the day as you can use their large swimming pool. Free entrance.
