Prohibition (Jakarta) - Speakeasy and Live Jazz

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Prohibition is a restaurant, bar and speakeasy lounge located in Senayan Arcadia, just next to Plaza Senayan. It was opened by some of of the people behind Black Cat , Hacienda, Red Square and Boutique KTV. As the name suggests, the whole venue has a 1920s' prohibition theme from the interior design to the staff uniforms and the menu. The Restaurant: Chicago-Style Chop House Prohibition specializes in broiled meats, a cooking method similar to grilling. These include chicken, salmon, pork, mamb, and imported US beef. The prices range from just over Rp100,000 to Rp400,000 for the 200-g prime rib-eye steak. If you come with a small group, it's a good idea to share their 600-g "gangster" meat platter for just over Rp1M. Gangster Meat Platter If you are on a budget, they also serve a variety of pasta dishes for less than Rp100,000. You can see the full menu here: Menu Prohibition Jakarta . Motion Blue (Jazz - Fine Dining Lounge)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Motion Blue is a fine dining restaurant/lounge located in Fairmont Hotel in Jakarta. It was named Cotton Club for a couple months, then changed its name. You can read my review of Cotton Club here . The concept of Motion Blue is very similar. It is an upmarket venue with live jazz bands or musicians every day. It is even more expensive than Black Cat . The food is nice, with mostly French fusion dishes.

Cotton Club Jakarta (Jazz and Fine Dining)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Update October 2015: Cotton Club has been replaced with Motion Blue . The Cotton Club Jakarta is a new jazz club and fine dining restaurant located in the  Fairmont Hotel  in Senayan. It is managed by the same group behind the Blue Note and the Cotton Club in Tokyo, both among the best venues in the city to listen to jazz, soul, or latin music live bands. I don't think they can offer the exact same experience as it will be much harder to attract the best international jazz performers in Jakarta. Still, it has the potential of becoming a nightlife hotspot for an older type of clientele. It will compete with nearby Black Cat in Senayan Arcadia, but also with a bunch of new upmarket lounges that have opened recently like Artoz , Hemingway or Nip And Dram .

Artoz Whisky and Cognac Bar (Jakarta)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Artoz is a whisky bar/lounge located in the Energy Building in SCBD. It replaced Marley's Bar which closed down a while ago. It claims to be the largest collection of Whisky and Cognac in Jakarta, but I am not sure it is true as I believe there is quite an extensive spirit menu in Nip & Dram as well. I visited Artoz during Ramadan, probably not the best time to do so and unsurprisingly it was empty. Artoz is similar with Nip and Dram actually, both in terms of concept, size and setting: You have comfortable leather sofas and chairs spread across a windowless room, with a bar on on side and a live music stage on the other one. The main difference I saw is that Artoz is not as dark and it seems they don't have those crazy minimum spend amounts. The prices are pretty steep still, about USD15 for a standard cocktail. You are also given the menu of the French Restaurant  Amuz , which belong to the same person (Chef Gilles Marx, also behind Auroz).

Red White Jazz Lounge (Kemang)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Red White Lounge is one of the few venues in Jakarta to listen to live Jazz. To my knowledge, there is only Black Cat in Senayan Arcadia which is similar. Red White is run by Indra Lesmana, a well-known Indonesian jazz pianist. They have an impressive schedule and it is run by passionate people.  You can check their website:  www.redwhitelounge.com , or their twitter @RWLounge for show updates.  Red White Jazz Lounge Jakarta Jalan Kemang Raya 16B, South Jakarta, Indonesia 12730 Phone number: +62 21 71792252 +62 (0) 8 21 23 75 1943 +62 (0) 8 21 19160 1999

Tartine Restaurant FX Mall

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Tartine is a moderately priced eatery focusing on tartine, a french word for a slice of bread topped with anything eatable (just like a sandwich without a second piece of bread to close it). It is not haute cuisine but it is good enough and creative. Tartine is also very pleasant in its design: Elegant, yet simple and homey. For the price you pay, it is worth it not so much for the food, but rather for the atmosphere, very cozy. Opening Hours: From Sunday to Thursday: 9am to 12am Friday and Saturday: 9am to 2am Live Music from Wednesday to Saturday. Happy Hours: From 4pm to 6pm = 50% discount. Decanter Wine Lounge Kuningan

By The Jakarta Team →
Decanter is an upscale wine house and restaurant, popular with both expats and locals. Intimate interior design, quite comfortable and calm, Decanter is a good place to discover in Jakarta, close to the city center. Not a cheap place to eat & drink but worth it. You may find useful information about Decanter's events, staff and news on their website: www.decanterjakarta.com . You may also want to check their facebook fanpage (from which the photos were taken): Decanter Wine Lounge & Restaurant .

Black Cat Jakarta Jazz Club (Senayan Arcadia)

By The Jakarta Team →
BlackCat Jazz Supper club is a classy, upmarket jazz Bar with good live performances. The seats are not so comfortable though and it’s a bit too dark. Mixed expat and Indonesian crowd. that I didn't find so pretentious for a Jazz bar . Not far from Red Square bar if you feel like going out after that..

Burgundy Bar & Lounge & Live Jazz Music (Hyatt Hotel Jakarta)

By The Jakarta Team →
Expensive drinks (Beer = Rp 60k), but classy bar with live music everyday (including Jazz ) and businessmen talking. Not a hotspot of Jakarta nightlife and rather quiet, it attracts the capital's most upmarket crowd. Definitely not a girls' bar comparing with BATS in Shangri La hotel or CJs bar in Hotel Mulia, but unexpected meetings are not impossible since some rich, older indonesian women come here. There are a few working girls as well that always hang out in Burgundy and I suppose they are up for grab. Awesome view on Plaza Indonesia, making the experience quite enjoyable.

Cava Jazz Coffee Lounge (Cikini)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Cava (ça va in French, meaning "I'm feeling good) is a new restaurant and bar in Cikini with jazz music in the background. A live band plays there but only once a week, on Saturday evenings from 7pm to 10pm. The place is gorgeous but expensive (around 150,000rp for one person) and the food far from being awesome, except for the desserts. I recommend it if you like live jazz  and come on a saturday night. Do make a reservation because Cava isn't so big. Cava-jazz coffee lounge

Eastern Promise Pub and Live Music (Kemang)

By The Jakarta Team →
Eastern Promise is a friendly, laid-back expat pub with several rooms, each with a particular atmosphere. You have a quiet bar in the entrance, then a dining room for eating British and Indian food , and in the back a beer garden with live music for partying. Also on the side, a billiard/darts room, and a sports-watching room. Eastern Promise is usually very crowded, especially on weekends, with a lot of expatriates mostly above 35.

Kudus Bar Jakarta (The Sultan Hotel, ex-Hilton, Jalan Sudirman)

By The Jakarta Team →
Nice classy wine bar, popular with businessmen, expats and wealthy locals. The decor is inspired by the town of Kudus, in Central Java, to make its interior Jakarta's first "Javanese wine lounge". The beautiful furniture and artefacts gives Kudus an elegant feel, without being too pompous. You also have an interesting selection of live music, from jazz to acoustic, every day from 8pm to midnight (you can check the schedule here: Sultan Jakarta Kudus Bar ). Kudus is quite expensive, but you have some interesting discounts if you come during the happy hours, from 5pm to 8pm, with 30% off on beers and soft drinks and 15% off on wines.

Orleans Bistro Live Music and Dining

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Orleans Bistro is a fine dining restaurant featuring live jazz music every Friday nights. The other nights, from Wednesday to Saturday, a professional pianist will entertain clients at the piano with some classic tunes and they are welcomed to sing along. The food is expensive for Indonesian standards, around 80,000 rupiah per dish, but well worth it as it is creative and unique in Jakarta. The menu is made of a very subtle fusion of Cajun and Indonesian dishes. Photo:

Shanghai Blue 1920

By The Jakarta Team →
Shanghai Blue 1920 is a chic restaurant and bar owned by the Tugu Group, who possesses various hotels and restaurants in Indonesia. The objective of the bar is to bring you back to the golden era of Shanghai (apparently in 1920 was the time to be there…). I give a 10/10 for the settings, really beautiful and impressing. The food is a mix of Chinese , Betawi and Peranakan, that of the first Chinese migrants who came to Indonesia. It is excellent and creative, but very expensive: At least Rp. 150,000 per person with wine. There is a live band playing old jazz tunes almost every evening, with a focus on Mandarin Jazz. Occasionally, you also have guest singers and musicians. You can check their website for more information.

The Lounge (Hotel Le Grandeur Jakarta)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
The Lounge is the bar inside Le Grandeur Hotel in Mangga Dua. Surprinsingly for North Jakarta, it is not a seedy place but a classy Jazz lounge with modern design and great service. If you are staying in North Jakarta and you want a place without the usual house music/prostitution scene, I think that The Lounge is perfect. The live music starts at 8.30pm, everyday, and finishes at 00h30.

The Bar in Four Seasons Hotel

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Little know and quiet, "The Bar" is the lounge of the Four Seasons Hotel. It isn't very crowded, except with a few regulars who come to enjoy the live jazz music . Usually it happens 4 times a week but you may call them first to ask for more details.
