Memories Cafe (Jalan Jaksa) - CLOSED

By The Jakarta Team

Update 2021: I just walked past Memories Café and it was closed with a sign "For Sale". I'm keeping the review here in case some people want to remember what it was like.

The most popular bar in Jalan Jaksa. It has a live music band almost every night, playing a mix of favorite indonesian pop song and classic Top 40. The drinks, especially beer is really cheap, around Rp. 18,000/bottle, so you will meet many backpackers, english teachers and mid-class indonesians.

  2. Memories is still a popular place in Jaksa, with the usual shitbag crowd of backpackers, sleazy hookers and rent boys and the like. You could hold out a shit-stained 1000 rupiah note in that place and your arm would be missing a second later.

  3. I found the place to be funny and lively but unfortunately many gays there and too many hookers

  6. Fat Freddy, your comment made me LOL. I know the place well, and know what you mean, but if does have a certain charm, when you are in the mood. I know a lovely lady there, Grace, who is a dear lady.

  9. Yes, I have been there. Beer is cheap indeed. Nice place. Pity the band does not know some old popular numbers, but ok. Everytime I visit Jakarta, you can find me there in the evening/night. Nice place!!

  10. JL Jaksa has always been fun, it is cheap and cheerful, and i can not agree with some of the earlier comments from Fat Fredy, i first went there in 1988. I accept that the bars on jaksa are low class but so is the bill at the end of the night, you get what u pay for. In some ways the night life there is quite authentic, more so than the expensive hotel bars. Anyway with its location it is a good place to get a few cheap beers in your system before heading for the nightclubs/

  14. Cheap and cheerful indeed!

Looking at the bar, its shit, no doubt about it.
But its full of people, nice people and is very cheap.

I saw the banci2, bencong2 and hooker2 cruising the streets but they didn't bother me at all, they're just looking for people that want to be found...

Go there to: Have a laugh and make friends.
Don't go there to: impress anyone or not sweat.

  15. I absolutely utterly adore this place. Beers are cheap. Folks are friendly, down to earth. I went midweek, a Thursday night and the comment about a shitstained Rp 1,000 (thats 6 pence sterling) being snatched is pretty wrong. Keep your wits about you like any other city, and you'll be fine. Don't get too drunk.

  16. Spent 5 years in Jakarta and one of the things I miss most is Memories; authentic, friendly and fun. I enjoyed the music, made friends with staff and customers and never had any sort of problem even when I went there on my own as a middle aged expat woman. People just get what they go looking for. I went there looking for live music, a drink and the dance floor and i sure got it besides the human "live show" you can enjoy if you like to watch people. 21. Sitting in the bar now, 9pm thursday evening and looks pretty dead. A few locals and expats/backpackers watching Indonesian football. Maybe good if you are with friends but I dont recommend it as a pre-drink venue before a club night if you are flying solo.

  22. Still going strong. Beers are 45ribu now for a big bintang. Quite full on weekend nights. Live music after 10 pm every night.
