1)Where to party in Jakarta?
Before starting to explore the city, it's important you have some idea of where the party places are in Jakarta so you won't lose time going from one place to another.
Bar hopping is great in Jakarta: A good night out should always include the right mix of low-class/middle class/high class places, alternating expat and more local clubs, and if possible in at least two different areas.
The main areas for partying in Jakarta are the following:
In South Jakarta
South Jakarta has mostly normal nightclubs and bars with no open prostitution or striptease. This is where most foreigners and expats will go.
Blok M/Jalan Falatehan
My Bar, Top Gun, D's Place, Highway To Elle
This is a street with hostess bars popular with oil and gas expatriates.
Kemang
Triple 9, Nu China, Tipsy, Hangover, Eastern Promise, Murphy's Pub
It used to be a trendy area for partying but as of 2015, it is not that happening. Many expats live in Kemang though so there are some decent expat bars and small clubs.
Near Jalan Sudirman
The Sudirman area has the highest density of good bars, clubs and lounges. They are usually expensive and trendy.
Senayan: X2 Club, Prohibition, CJs (Hotel Mulia) Domain, Portico, Revolution, Red Square
Senopati: Hemingway, H Gourmet and Vibes, Branché, Pao Pao, Monty's
Gatot Subroto: Dragonfly, Blowfish, Popular
Mega Kuningan: Safe House, Loewy, Bauhaus, Basque
SCBC (Sudirman Central Business District + Pacific Place): Empirica, Fable, Potato Head, Cork and Screw, Hard Rock Café, Foundry 8, Level II, Beer Garden
Plaza Indonesia / Grand Indonesia: Cloud, Immigrant Bar, SKYE, Dreams, Social House
You also have a few local bars in Pondok Indah, Gandaria or Cipete.
Central Jakarta
Sarinah/Jalan Jaksa
Memory's Café, Tiga Kuda, Dyna's Pub, Jaya Pub, Beer Garden Menteng,
Obviously not the best area for clubbing. Many bars in that area are cheap and popular with backpackers / English teachers.
In the area, the best places are two rooftop bars called BART and Awan Lounge.
North Jakarta
It is also referred to as Kota nightlife. I consider that everything North of Monas is North Jakarta (though it does not follow the official city limits).
When you enter this part of Jakarta, there are almost no clubs for foreigners. Most venues in that area are targeting male clients with sexy dancers, massage rooms, karaokes, etc. There is usually a lot of drugs too.
Pecenongan (Emporium, Velvet Bar, Goldmine, Tease Club, Classic Club)
Kota (Old Town, Colosseum, 1001)
Lokasari and Mangga Besar (Mille's, Newton, Haze Karaoke, Travel Hotel, Exotis, Pujasera)
Gadjah Mada (Malioboro, V2)
Hayam Wuruk (Illigals, Stadium, Emerald Disco)
Ancol and Mangga Dua (Hotel Alexis, Segarra, Fashion Hotel, M-Star)
Kota Indah (also called Peng-J with some massage parlours and disco-bars)
The Rest
Taman Anggrek (mostly massage parlours), Pluit and PIK (many cafés and small bars), Kelapa Gading (spas and karaokes).
What we usually do is to start partying in the south, and then head up-north, so that the more drunk we are, the wilder the party gets. Clubs in Kota also close later so it's good to know if you still feel like partying at 5am. Clubs that are still open at 5am include Stadium (closed now), Mille's, Exotis, Pujasera. Karaokes in Golden Crown and Colosseum are also still open until late.
2) Different party atmospheres
North Jakarta: Prostitution and Drugs
Generally speaking, the norther you go, the more prostitutes and the more drugs you will find. Many Jakartans never venture in North Jakarta because it has a very bad reputation and it is considered as dangerous. It is partially true: In this area, you will see that people outside the clubs are more annoying and aggressive. They will try to get money from you one way or another, asking you the more often for parking money (they make sure nothing happens to your car while you park) and taxi money (they stop the taxi for you. Very annoying because you can do it yourself. Avoid that by walking away a few 100 meters, otherwise pay something like rp2000).
In the north, you also have to be very careful with taxis. You will discover many taxis' names you had never heard before, and most of them try to copy the appearance of the trusted Blue Bird or Express. When I can, I always try not to catch a taxi right outside a club, and prefer to walk until a larger road, where i will take a Blue Bird or an Express. I don't think it's so dangerous, but I don't like being in the car of someone I don't trust. Apart from that, the reputation of Kota as a dangerous area in Jakarta is over-exaggerated, especially if you compare it to the dangerous areas in western countries, where you would never walk alone.
Clubs in North Jakarta ALWAYS have prostitutes, usually a combination of freelance prostitutes and girls under contracts. It has to be the biggest red light district in the world.
Contrary to Western belief, prostitution in Indonesia is not imported by sexual tourism, it is a very common practice among Indonesian of all classes. In only a few clubs in Kota you might meet some"normal girls": Stadium (closed), Colosseum and maybe Mille's on sunday mornings. The crowd in North Jakarta is mostly male, with some clubs more chinese-oriented (Sun City, Club 36), some mostly Indonesian (Mille's) or both (Golden Crown). Once again, apart from Stadium, few foreigners go there and you will probably be the only one on the dance floor.
There must be over 100 nightclubs and entertainment places in North Jakarta and it takes a lot of time to visit them all. The first time someone go there is always a surprise. After all, you thought you were in the biggest muslim country on earth! Some clubs are incredibly luxurious and decadent (Alexis Hotel, Sun City) and other are so trashy you are will feel uncomfortable inside (the Palme d'Or goes to Monggo Mas Club). Overall, you go from surprises to surprises and you never get tired.
Drugs, mostly ecstasy, crystal meth (shabu-shabu, called yaba in Thailand) and heroin (putau in Indonesian) are very common in Kota, to a point you cannot even begin to comprehend. In some clubs, everyone is on pills, for instance in Sydney 2000. You can read my article: Drugs in Indonesia.
South Jakarta: Westernized clubs with pockets of prostitution
South of Monas, you have a majority of upmarket classy clubs and bars, though not only.
In Blok M, the Falatehan street is a small red light district aimed at expats and sex tourists. 99% of the girls are prostitutes or professional girlfriends, working their ways to your wallet one way (direct payment) or the other (sugar daddy). I rarely party in this area and I don't really like it except if I'm really drunk.
Hotel bars, especially BATS-CJs-Tiga Puluh are pick-up joints with 85% of the girls working as freelance prostitutes. You can also just enjoy the live band and meet other expats (male mostly). Girls in these hotel bars are usually smarter and better educated than other girls in Blok M but that just means they will know better how to scam you. BE CAREFUL! Cheating rate is 99%! Most of them already have one or two boyfriends in Indonesia or elsewhere.
Some bars and clubs have a mix of prostitutes and normal girls, for instance X2, Eastern Promise, Dragonfly. It can be quite difficult to guess who is who. I know more than one man who had the surprise of having to pay for a one-night-stand with a girl they genuinely thought was normal.
You probably want to meet girls who will sleep with you just for the fun of it. Maybe you are looking to engage in a healthy relationship. In that case, I would not recommend meeting a girl in a bar in Jakarta. Please read my guides Meeting Girls in Jakarta and Online Dating in Indonesia to avoid making the wrong choices.
In the south, most of the best clubs are very posh, even by Western standards.. The most famous ones are Empirica, Fable, Dragonfly, Blowfish, Immigrant and X2. Every month or so, a new club opens for socialites, models and expats, but the competition is tough on this segment and most of them fail.
You also have popular smaller clubs in Kemang, but they target younger people, mainly college and high-school students, between 18 and less than 25.
The dress code is usually stricter for woman than man. For man, a polo or a shirt, jeans (not torn) and casual shoes is enough. For woman, you may have to wear high-heels and a skirt.
Some areas cater to a specific audience: Jalan Jaksa is where most backpackers and expats on a budget go for a drink. Senopati is for hipsters. Cikini is popular with Middle-easterners. Some venues specialize in latin music and salsa (see my guide: Salsa in Jakarta).

Thank you for this tips, it a very complete guide to nightlife in Jakarta... be back on your blog guys!
ReplyDeleteYes I agree great insight to jakarta witnhin a few lines of reading - I hope to go in Sep or Oct 09 - so far been to KL, Saigon, Hanoi, short stay in Singapore - but never thought of jakarta till someone contacted me from there - cos otherwise it would have just passed me by - but am surprised by what a rocking place it sounds - so here I come :)
ReplyDeleteas another expat living in jakarta, i just wanted to post to say that this was a spot-on analysis
ReplyDeleteThankyou for the very complete guide to Jakarta. Im heading out there for 10 days over new years with my girlfriend (both of us early 20s) and staying with friends who work in the oil industry (over 40's). I was wondering where you would recommend to go for a night out dancing, drinking etc with my gf where we are not going to be hounded by prostitutes or druggies? Im pretty open minded but dont want to go anywhere too offensive! Also, whats the prices like in Jakarta for drinks, entrance etc? Thanks in advance, great info on the city, cant wait to go!
ReplyDeleteYou can try Dragonfly, Blowfish, Immigrant for a start... X2 also is good and nearby is Red Square which is really fun even though some prostitutes. In the south, near Kemang, you have other good clubs, for younger people, like Nu China. And if you are courageous, you should at least try going to Stadium in Kota, or maybe Sun City, which is not so offensive (many prostitutes but no drugs)... hope you have fun and that you can give us your feedback!
ReplyDeletethis is a very good blog!
ReplyDeleteThank you guys for the great work you've done. Jakarta has more appeal now to me. May I ask where that picture was taken?
ReplyDeleteHi Za, the picture of the sexy girls were taken in the now defunct embassy club if im not wrong. Ludo from JKT100BARS.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your reply Ludo. This blog is a must read for any serious party goer. What's the best time (of the year) to have a good time?
ReplyDeleteHi Za, I'm happy you like the blog.. we really enjoy when readers gives us a feedback about their experience of Jakarta Nightlife in order to improve what we write and be more useful for clubbing lovers... I think apart from Ramadhan, Idul Adha, and other religious holidays, Jakarta is good for partying all-year round.. I couldn't say one period is better than another..
ReplyDeletethis article is great written. i will be in 2 weeks in jakarta again. i mostly only know the area around jalan jaksa and north jakarta. jalan jaksa is great for cheap hotels and because the restaurants. Papa cafe is my favorite restaurant there for drinking. And for eating is Ya Udah very good becuase it's large selection of european food. The first night i will go to my favorite clubs: Stadium and Mille's. The small room in Mille's is very cool. Dark and the music is very good. I never forget the mornings or noons when i go out from there. The sun is shining in your face, ihhh, taxi, taxi... And i also don't find it so dangerous there in North Jakarta. I, as european, was several times alone there and i never had a problem. And this site is good, very good work, thanks. Maybe we will see us sometimes in Jakarta.
ReplyDeletecall me if u wanna come to jakarta

Am half Indonesian/English and frequently visit Indonesia, but have stayed clear of Jakarta due to a perception of inaccessibility - not anymore, excellent blog! Was wondering if anyone could advise in terms of nightlife, me and my friends are big fans of electronic music and would like some answers to a few questions about it in Jakarta, and also bali
ReplyDeletePlease email me on chriswalker@hotmail.co.uk if you are in the know about dance music in Jakarta or Bali, any help much appreciated
And where would a good central place to stay for a visitor of Jakarta nightlife? Starting at South and finishing in North Jakarta I guess Batavia Hotel??
ReplyDeleteIn central Jakarta, the best deal in my opinion is to Stay in Ibis Hotel. You have two Ibis in the area, Tamarin and Arcadia and one of them has a swimming pool... you should find more information on google. Very correct price, i paid 50 dollars on a Thursday with continental breakfast.
ReplyDeleteI always get good rates on agoda.com and find their website very helpful and the service has always been good for me.
ReplyDeleteFor example, I reserved Park Lane hotel (http://www.parklanejakarta.com)in May for only $65 (incl breakfast) per night.. thru the website, the best rate for a deluxe on the same nite was $100
Hi there. I'm hoping to visit Jakarta for a few days soon. I'm more into the bar scene than club scene (being 40, lol). Can you advise me where is a good area/hotel to stay. I'd like to sample from the low through to high end. Many thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi, I advise you to read our guide :Preparing A Weekend In Jakarta
ReplyDeleteWe mention quite a few names of hotels and we hope it will help you. If you have more questions, please ask us.
Cheers,
Stéphane

ReplyDeletei am planning to visit jakarta, godfather779@hotmail.com is my email looking for decent girls
ReplyDeleteDecent girls will not go to clubbing in the evening. Be realistic!
DeleteHi I visit Jakarta a fair bit. One thing I dont understand is that clubbing in Jkta starts VERY late even on weekday - for eg Wed nights, which is typically ladies night. You can walk into Dragonfly at 10.30pm and there is NOT a single soul.
ReplyDeleteCan someone enlgihten me and provide some indication of which clubs are worth visiting before 10pm.
I know lounges like CJs, BATS etc are ok. I am talking about clubs like Blowfish, Immigrant etc
Awesome !!!, I have been to the best places in Berlin, Monte Carlo, Cannes, Saint Tropez, Marbella, Paris, London, New York, Tokyo, Bangkok, Dubai, Bahrain, Beirut, Cairo…, but your Jakarta insight has redefined the word Nightlife. I am absolutely looking forward to Jakarta in 2011. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteBe careful with 'ayams' in jakarta! Have fun :)

ReplyDeleteHey there, I am in jakarta for 3 months and I already visited a lot of places and clubs and I only got known them because of this f****** good webside. But I have a question, some friends are going to visit me during the ramadan period so my question is about the clubs if they are open or not or if they may just close earlier? Or do you know a club wich is not going to change their habits during ramadan! I asked the locals and everybody is telling something else.............
ReplyDeleteHave you read this: Jakarta nightlife during ramadan?
ReplyDeleteNightlife in Jakarta is quite dead during ramadhan so it's best to postpone your trip, but if you can't do otherwise, there are still a few places to have fun (except two days after the start of ramadhan and 2 days before the end, at which time everything is closed)
Thx a lot now i also got an ideaa where i can go with them!
ReplyDeletehi I am visiting jakarta next week. Can anyone suggest nice hotel to stay which has nude dancing, stripeers, special massage ?
ReplyDeleteBetter go to thailand or philippines for sex.
DeleteFellow party goers, a few friends and I will visit Jkt next week. Eager to try CJ, BATS or Red Square. Can anyone give me idea what one expect to pay for freelance working girl for overnite pick-up from these joints? Thanks a lot in advance.

DeleteWow, very useful website. I found this site through a recommendation on the Pattaya Addicts forum. It's great to find out that there are always new alternatives popping up in the SEA nightlife :) . Especially now that the Thai baht is so high, prices and number of farangs are increasing and attitudes of the girls are worsening over there... keep up the good work! BTW, what is the indo name for "farang"? thanks
ReplyDeleteIndo name for 'farang' is 'bule'.
DeleteSo you come to jakarta for cheap whores? Hope you will find your 'ayam' without being scammed.
DeleteSuggest me some safe nightlife spots/Clubs without risk of facing road blocks and Police raids
ReplyDeletefarang=bule
ReplyDeleteSo, the question is... is there any setting comparable to old Tanamur and JJ left ? Those treasures have been closed for almost a decade but miss the joints. Convenient hangouts they were.
ReplyDeleteI'm around a few days every few months and would really like to spend some late nights in the similar trash :)
Is it safe for a foreigner to travel alone to Jakarta in the middle of july (I will leave before Ramadan)? I plan on staying at the south area of Jakara, and will visit the various venues on offer, also Alexis Hotel in the north.
ReplyDeleteof course it is safe. What kind of war zone do you think Indonesia is? :) it is actually safe. if you want to ask about jakarta, u can chat me sam.adiputra@yahoo.com. i'll be gladly help u guys
ReplyDeleteHey,
ReplyDeleteI have just moved to a hotel in Karawaci, Tangerang. I am working in Indonesia and have a short assignment of around 2months. I read a lot about the nightlife and party scene in Indonesia but now I think I am stuck outside the city and I don't really know how to venture out and come back late at night from Jakarta. Is there any pub or bar I can go to to have a few beers and chill and maybe talk to some girls ;). Can I still go to Jakarta and come back to my hotel early morning or Night by a Taxi? All this is confusing specially because I don't know bahasa. Please help me out. Thnx
Hi do u still in Tanggerang I have friend there maybe u can contac her just for having fun together, she also looking friend specially a Bule for hang out together...!
DeleteI'm almost been 5 years in Indonesia right now , most likely in Jakarta. But untill now i still haven't find some coke in here, the dealers always offering me XTC or that shabu2 crap(don't know what the hell that is) but im not into that shit I prefer coke. Does someone knows where i could get this stuff and how much is the price for 1 gram ?
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty psyched about going to Jakarta. I'm planning a trip in June 2013, mostly to make sure I have enough money to have a damn good time. And reading this blog and scouring the many reviews has been a huge help to me. Where I live in the US, there isn't much to do in terms of nightlife. A country bar and a rap bar, with a few little pubs here and there. I'm ready for the culture shock!
ReplyDeleteI just turned 21 and am here for a couple of weeks in Jakarta! I don't really know anyone here, would anyone know some good spots around town for a girl travelling alone to check out?
ReplyDeleteHI all, travelling to Jakarta for 1 week from 15th july. Staying at Atlet century in senayan. can anyone recommend a good night club to go to every night of the week and to find 'good companionship' :) how much would said companionship run? look forward. cheers
ReplyDeletehey if anyboday avilabe in jakarta on 29th of diz month .. if anyone could help me out der it wud be much appreciated so pls do let me know or mail me in avi.arivij@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteDepend on what you are looking for and budget
ReplyDeleteHotel Atlet Century park close to X2 and Red Square (walking distance)
Another one close by is Cj in Hotel Mulia.
But they are more on the costly side
It also not to far from Blok M area, which is relatively cheaper and more working girl.
But if you want best service you need to go to the north/kota area.
For companionship depend on the location and kind of girl.
Jakarta have from $30 to $300 for regular working girl.
Model and others might go even higher.
For first timer in Jakarta who want to enjoy the nightlife, you can email me to cooldoe@gmail.com
I can help to set package that suit your taste and budget
Hey there!
ReplyDeleteAnyone going to the Djakarta Warehouse Project Music Festival this year in december? awesome lineup! if anyone's interested, just let me know... looking for companian!
cheers...
fyi bule is also known for auntie ;)

Hi all!
ReplyDeleteI'm an Indonesian girl, my name is Anggi and I'm 19 years old. Tomorrow night, 8 pm at DragonFly Jakarta, there's a NYE Celebration with a BANG! EDM's rising star Gregori Klosman. I have 2 free entries, too bad I haven't found any companion, yet. Is there anyone out here interested with this and planning to go with me? if there is, just let me know by invite my pin BB: 20f3427d or my phone number: 083873147080. I'm really looking forward a companion. Uhm actually, I'm looking for a bule one, a good one and a nice one guy to go with me.
Thankyou, cheers! xx
hi Anggi, would you go out with me for fun?my name Rico..davlinrico@gmail.com
Deleteeveryone beware though, I have lived here on/off since the mid 90's. I know confirmed cases of expats living with Aids who still frequent the blok M bars, I know others who come regularly to indo(also with aids). I have known one indo girl who had aids and has since died (although this last one, I can not confirm). I am 100% certain that there is a lot of Aids and hep B/C out there in the community. So play very safe, aids stats are just not reported or known.
ReplyDeleteSo...I want to visit now..

Willing to pay but not after prostitues and gold diggers.
Send and e-mail to willjackass898@gmail.com with a pic ASAP.

I am Indonesian, female and don't even know half of the places you mentioned above. Kota has bad reputation among us (normal people as you said) and I never go there. Indonesian women who will go with you clubbing without knowing who you are, mostly prostitutes or gold diggers. We just have different culture with the Western people (my husband is European so yes, I understand and no, he doesn't know these places either). You don't normally go clubbing with strangers.
