Hooch is a trendy bar located in Salcedo Village, Makati, Manila. It is attached to the gourmet restaurant Lulu, headed by Chef Tom Hines.

It is surfing on the global trend of "speakeasies", those bars that are popping up everywhere recreating a Prohibition-era atmosphere. If you travel a bit, you've probably seen a few of these, with a hipster mixologist behind the bar and a complex cocktail menu.

In the case of Hooch, the mixologist is Englishman Jay Doy, one of the main reasons the bar is so popular with expats and local girls. You might not enjoy every drink he does, but for sure trying all of them is a good excuse for getting drunk (they have 104 signature cocktails so it might take a while though). You can also get food from Lulu, which serves a range of excellent comfort food from all over the planet.

The crowd is chic, usually above 25, with a good proportion of girls. Among them you can spot some local celebrities and models from time to time. On weekends, when it gets more crowded, it is definitely a pick-up place. In particular, you can go to their Reminisce retro nights on Saturdays.

The design is not amazing but it is enough to create a cozy atmosphere. Music is loungy to slightly upbeat depending on the time of the evening. It never gets too loud.

Prices are on the high side, yet still acceptable by Western standards: You'll pay about 250-400PHP for normal cocktails, 120PHP for local beer, and 400 PHP for food. Happy Hours offer a generous 50% discount on cocktails and draft beers from noon to 6pm on weekdays and from 2pm to 5pm on weekends.

Overall: Hooch is one of the happening bars in Makati at the time of writing. It is a recommended place to visit for pre-party drinks and food.
