Festivals In Jakarta

By The Jakarta Team

All year round, Jakarta has a fair number of festivals taking place. As a visitor, you can try to make your trip coincide with one of these events. Few tourists actually know about them and it will be a good opportunity for you to see the city through a different angle.

The following list is not exhaustive, and I will update it regularly. When available, click on the name of the festival to see the full description.

South to South Festival “focuses on human rights and social issues surrounding natural resources and the environment in Southern (mostly developing) nations”. In 2010, featured films talked about subjects such as oil extracting in the Arctic or the Lapindo crisis in Central Java. All screenings are free and take place in the Goethe Institute or the CCF.

More infos should be in this website which is currently down: http://stosfestival.org
Until they get everything fixed, you can also check their facebook event page here.

Lantern Festival (Cap Go Meh)
The Lantern Festival marks the 15th day of the Chinese New Year and it is celebrated in Jakarta’s Chinese district of Glodok by 4,000 people each year. It’s a real mess over there but a very funny thing to do if you like big, colourful crowds and noise.

Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival
The most popular festival in Jakarta, click for the full review and pictures: Jakarta Jazz Festival.

The Jakarta Fashion & Food Festival (JFFF) was created in 2004 and it is supported by DKI Jakarta’s District Government, Summarecon, the Association of Indonesian Fashion Designers & Entrepreneurs (APPMI), Martha Tilaar Group, MRA Media Group, Metro TV and Esmod School of Fashion. It is gaining in popularity each each and it is being used by many foreign companies to promote their products.
Lots of attractions: Make-up classes, food tasting, fashion shows, live music, etc...

  1. Waouh! Thanks for all the info. Good job keep updating man. Cheers. Dyna

  2. My first trip to Jakarta was for the Java Jazz Festival 2009, which I thought was excellent! I wrote an article on it in TELL (an English language monthly magazine published in Malaysia).

I went again for the recently concluded Java Jazz Festival 2010, and I truly recommend people from neighbouring Malaysia, Singapore - Australia even - to fly to Jakarta every March for this world-renowned jazz festival every March.
