Note: I wrote this review 10 years ago but it is still up-to-date!

Everybody was telling me about a place called "Louis" in Mega Kuningan, but I couldn't find where it was or what it was. It took me two months to realize that people were actually talking about Loewy, that you should pronounce like Loui (English speakers) or Louis (French speakers).

Loewy is a retro-chic French bistro, with a cosmopolitan vibe: Half the customers are foreigners, and the other half Indonesians, usually between 30 and 45 years-old. Most of them are from the upper-class. It is owned by some of the folks behind Potato Head, from which they took the idea to partially open the restaurant to the air. This is quite bold for Jakarta, and you may feel hot inside when it is packed.

Since it opened in 2008, Loewy has always been a happening venue, anytime of the day. People go there for lunch, for brunches, for an after-work drink, and finally to party. They have decent European food (in particular French), quite pricey, and a long selection of drinks, wine and cocktails. Starting at around 10pm, the music gets louder, and the bar will start being very lively, with a lot of flirting and teasing around among the clients. If you are single, this is a spot to try, especially on Wednesdays.

Overall: Loewy has a lot of charm, and it is crowded most of the time. The restaurant, in my opinion, is worth a try, but the most interesting is the bar, which can be a great venue for a pre-clubbing drink. If you hate posh, expensive places, with a corporate vibe, avoid it though.

One more thing: Make a reservation for eating.

  1. The food in Loewy is totally overpriced... apart from the perfect location and OK setting, I don't see a reason to go there except for showing off and get ripped..

  2. Although I usually prefer Dangdut bars than high class places, I think Loewy is a good concept, at least for lunch (I never tried for dinner). The ambiance music, the opened area, the nice waiters and the good food make this place a good one.

Moreover, you can find good imported beer(Especially Belgium's Leffe).

  4. Could not disagree more with the notion that the food is overpriced! The tenderloin (a sizeable 220g) was cooked to perfection, served with nice, fresh pommes frites and sauce bernaise and only cost like 135k plus tax. That is very, very reasonable compared to many other kinda posh expat places! Also, they have Asian fare like Hainanese rice and numerous other dishes on the menu that cost between 50k and 70k!

  5. So far, loewy is one of the most reasonable price with a good food :)

  6. my average meal here costs me about 10k. so what that guy spent on 1 meal(V), is almost as much as i spend on food for a whole week. but he disagrees its expensive

  7. Actually they are completely rude to you if you are an asian girl and aren't a prostitute (ie not giving kickbacks to the bar). They charge you for drinks you never ordered, and everyone treats you like a prostitute anyways, so it's really only a bar for prostitutes and american/british male sluts who get drunk and try to sleep with everyone.

  8. This place is only to be seen and see ... There is no such thing as high quality food ! In my opinion the food is horrible ... I can say that because I am privileged to have been criticizing restaurant across the world for 30 years already ... If you think the food here is good , you absolutely have no taste ! Visited twice to wrote a good report , trying 15 dishes with my associates I can only say ashame that this place is
Full ... Food quality is poor , they don't know the difference between Bleu and a point ! It's une catastrophe ! Wine selection , poor ! Venue : seats poor , staff , well , they were nice but it took 20 minutes before they found our special wine ... Overall : worth 3/10

  15. Very disappointing experience. Food is below average in quality, very pricey. AC never works, never go back again...

  16. Went to this place twice.. First is colleague lunch and second one is for Friday chill with my friends.

None of in those occasions that left me with good impression. The staff are arrogant. 1 of the lady staff treated girls as if she is the most beautiful girl in this world.

Funny thing is they will treat u differently when u hv expats next to u whose grabbing ur hips or hands. Food was average, drink was ok but the service is totally poor.

For wine or cocktail night i would prefer Social House or Potato Head wayyy better than this place.

  18. I guess who said that prostitutes place is the one who cant catch expat there, few times I go there, and I saw girls came with very sexy dress, but they were not allowed to come in. Maybe they the one who called Loewy "it" place was the one who not allowed to come

    1. Hahaha i found this comment really funny. you just wrote down and shared the real shit about this country and some of the people (sad but true i gotta admit it even i am an indonesian, what a shame!!)

  20. EXPAT ONLY establishment - Overcharged accordingly. Bule caucasians welcome (ayam companion allowed if dressed modestly). Foreign Orientals (Japanese & Indon Chinese) on waiting list or wait outside security for available table. Indon locals staff only, otherwise allowed if accompanied by bule boss. Lady staffs with fake multi-colour contact lenses desperate for bule husband to escape poverty (average bill half of her monthly salary). Top place, tragic country.

  21. I go there many times.. pre-clubbing drinks, dinners,, relaxed Sunday brunches, dinner on Wed, etc. The food is good, nothing really special. I like the vibe and the crowd. The staff can be slow and stupid sometimes, but I guess mostly because it's busy hours with lots of customers to attend to. Oh, and I go there with my Indonesian female friends.. no expat or whatever. Of course where there are expat guys, there will always be ayams anywhere, Loewy is no exception. But their presence is not a nuisance anyway. It's a restaurant & bar, not a club, so many non ayam people go there to eat as well!

  22. I went last night and the staff totally freak. They dont have a manner to me. Only respect to my friend because he's bule and they look at me like im a prostitute. Never go there again. Freak place! Stupid selection to spend money!

  23. I go there about 2 times per month, for me it's totally not a good place to hang out, i'm a western male early 40's, most of the girls in Loewy are quite stuck up and arrogant, looking for a one night stand, yes but not with me that has never happened and will never happen.

That being said fat elderly western guys or just old western guys do pull here and i mean they pull seriously, many of the girls in Loewy fancy old overweight guys (not for monetary reasons) but for reasons unbeknownst to me although, once i saw a model type hitting up an old overweight western guy and she was totally crazy about him, when they were about to leave and after she called her driver to pick them up (rich woman) she went to the toilet and i could not help myself to wait for her coming out to ask her why she liked that guy.

She came out and actually replied my question when i asked her, she said she loved fat guys because in her experience they were strong and very good lovers, so this might be one of the reasons so many Jakarta girls (hot ones) are into old overweight guys, the other one (often mentioned) being that many local girls suffer from daddy complex (rich daddy always out on business or whatever and never having time for the girls when they were young).

Anyway i am not their type that much is true and this goes for all the girls in Jakarta everywhere.

    1. Haha. Nice information. Thanks for that report and your balls to ask her.

So if I'm not an old ass and have muscles instead of fat I'm going to become gay there? :))

    2. Your opening statement is quite confusing..If you find it "totally not a good place to hang out", then why on earth do you go there twice a month?
Especially with all this complaining about local girls not being in to you?

      Just asking, mate.. :)

  24. I love Loewy for Sunday brunch with the girls. The place is so relaxing on Sunday morning, the crowd is nice, and Mega Kuningan is at its best on Sunday, very relaxing and seems like im not in Jakarta. I read some comments all over the internet said it’s not a friendly place for indonesian women. But im indonesian and the staffs seem nice. I once forgot to make a reservation for Sunday lunch, but the staff still friendly and manage themselves to find a nice spot for us. The food is okay, not really overprice compare to some other fancy restaurant. But i never come here for dinner or pre-club drink, so i cant give my opinion on evening scene.

  25. As a western guy this place is a total goldmine. Go there prior to Basque and you'll do very well.
