An all-time favourite of Jakarta's nightlife, BATS is the bar of the Shangri-La Hotel in Jakarta. It is the equivalent of BRIX in Grand Hyatt in Singapore. It is very, very popular among expatriates, especially those who are already married. Easy to know why, considering the number of pretty, sexy girls. But the place isn't just about finding a partner. You can have a lot of fun partying there because you will easily meet people in a relaxed atmosphere.
BATS has a live band, imported from Quebec the more often and playing Top 40 songs. A bit annoying because it's hard to talk and hard to find a place to seat though, but at least you will be pushed in the crowd and on the dancefloor. The entrance fee is quite expensive, around Rp. 150,000, but they will serve you a very large beer. Good to go on Sunday or Monday because it is one of the few places still crowded. Very tasty steaks at the restaurant.

ReplyDeleteI was there last week. Took me 20 minutes to get served by the waiter that spent more time chatting up girls than serving. Didn't want to go to the bar to get my own beer otherwise I'd lose my seat!

DeleteIt can be hell if you go to BATS to early in the night... My advice is to go there after 1AM, you will still have fun and there are always some girls left (and they are smashed, ready to sleep with anybody!).
ReplyDeleteThere's a reason this place is by far the most popular bar for expats. The atmosphere is amazing, girls are beautiful (and not all hookers), the band is easily the best covers band in Jakarta (although changes every 3-6 months), the bar is set out well. Beats CJs hands down.

Was there last night. Packed, but at USD11 for a beer, I didn't stay too long. Even New York is cheaper. Nice looking girls inside, but elderly expense account expats get the pick of them. Decided to go to Blok M instead.

Here are my answers:
ReplyDelete1) In Bats, I would not advise you to look for a relationship with any of the girls there, even if they look nice and innocent. The girls in Bats are prostitutes, but they may sleep with you for free if they know you are an expat living in Jakarta in order to make you their (one of) their boyfriend(s). Don't know how much they charge, probably between Rp500,000 and Rp1M. It is safe to bring them to the hotel, but you'll have to do the "walk of shame" = having everyone look at you with a wh*re-looking girl.
2. The best time for me is very late, after 1.30am because most girls want to go home at that time, so it is more easy. The problem is that the more pretty may be gone already. Any day of the week is fine in BATS;
3. I was in BATS last Monday, it hasn't changed, still fun
4. Happy ending do you mean massage? If so, try Fortune Spa. If you just mean meeting a girl, I would say go to Red Square but on weekend nights. It is 10 min from Kuningan. Aphrodite not bad either..

Go to classy places (near Kuningan: Immigrant, Bibliotheque, Domain, Blowfish, Dragonfly or a bt further go to Kemang: Triple 9, Barcode) and try to get a phone number only. If you can't, make friend with a group of Indonesians, and soon they'll start introducing you..

It's a pity these places don't all just have a sign on the door telling everyone if it's an "all ayam" / "no ayam" / "mixed" place, so everyone would know how to behave. Men should be respectful to all women, of course, even if they are ayam, but if you're specifically looking to meet prostitutes I imagine the lines defining "respectful" may be in a slightly different place.

This is a fantastic place - words cannot adequately express BATS; it must be experienced. One of the most beatiful and exotic girl imaginable came with me to my room - at The Shangri-La...two people; one love! :-)

BATS is brilliant as long as you know what you're walking into. I had a great time, I was with a friend so I had no intentions of 'hooking a hooker' but the girls were pretty and looked quite fun.

Only real downside to this place is the prices, more expensive than London and New York for sure. Stick to beer and you won't end up with a MASSIVE bill...

I am Indonesian, a professional who work and living in London currently. When I lived in Jakarta now and then my friend and I used to go to BATS. Even now, we always went there when I am back to Jakarta for old time sake. We went there to have listen music, dance and have fun with friends. We didn’t try to hook or pick up any man. We all a professional, have a good day job and higher education. All I want to say is don’t make generalization, not all girls there like what you said. I think no matter which part of the world you go, all what you have to do is just open your eyes and your head to know which one is which one.

ReplyDeleteSome of my friends go to Bats quite a lot lately. They used to go to Red Square but since they are pushing 40 now and because Red Square becomes more and more....ahem..... professional they swapped the place for Bats.
ReplyDeleteBats does not feel as cramped as Red Square and is not as dark, the dance floor is bigger and there is a more festive mood in Bats then in Red Square.
Red Square is all about scoring a girl and the atmosphere can feel a bit tense (at least for them) Bats is more relaxed in that sense. For guys who are getting older can start feeling a bit out of place in Red Square because most of the expats and tourists are between 25 and 35, and the (nice) girls in Red Square tend to prefer these guys.
Those are some reasons why Bats can be a better choice for (older) bule guys but fact is that most girls in Bats look for money, in Red Square that percentage might be below 50% still, in Bats it is surely above 50% which does not mean that all the girls in Bats are looking for money.
My friends (one is over 55 actually) often pull a girl from Bats lately and many of the girls they took were just office girls who were not on the lookout for money. Even the 55 year old Kiwi guy got one 21 year old girl who did not need his money, lucky bastard
Well about 2 months ago stayed at the Shangri-La and went to Bats for a drink with friends. Aftter they left chatted with a nice gal and she stayed for the night. She made up a story about work and going to the office from the hotel and I just nodded to that. I knew the game and when she asked me for "taxi money" I said sure. What flored me was that she asked for 2 Million Rupiah. I thought I still had water in my ears from showering :). She was dead serious and I told her flat out that it is not going to happen. Gave her 1 Million just to get her out. So beware and set expectations before or that possible freebie could become costly.

It's not about the money (like the song) but it is about some kind of weird feeling that i cannot have sex with a girl who does not like me.

-the music used to be much better years back. The band that started July is at least better than the one in the first semester, so there is hope.
- The deaf DJ sucks!!! Since early 2011 all he can play with is "party rock anthem" in and out and back and forth. And the volume is now deafening the audience, at least if you are on the dance floor. Damn, I seriously consider for the first time bringing ear plugs to BATS , that's ridiculous... The volume increase after 2 am when the band stops is just crazy man, stop that BS, please!
- It's still a good bar but I feel management should be careful to keep it going into the right direction.
So this is what I hope for from BATS:
- Get the DJ lower the volume and instead playing some more variety of songs
- Get only the very best bands

Working girls appear in all 5 stars hotel as they offer convenience like a lobby drug store for hotel guest who are unfamiliar with Jakarta or lazy to travel for their needs. So i can assure you, you are paying 5 times more than the local price at very much compromised quality. Up to now, i am still suspicious that my neighborhood maids sneaked out of the house at night to come here.
Bats is great during happy hours 5pm - 8.30pm. It is the coziest pub in town at this hour with soft live music that creates an atmosphere great for chit-chat, catching up and making new friends with fellow expats and local executives. The fresh cold beers will keep you quenched and make you more and more talkative.
But it's time to hit the exit at about 10.30pm when the working girls start "clocking-in" and the louder live band starts if you don't like it too rowdy.
I come once,, most of the guy are foreigners,, professionals,,try to get off the stresses,, nice music for those who taste (including me)..

ReplyDeleteCame here immediately after CJs because we just could not find Red Square. It seems to be a bit better than CJs. The band is not as entertaining, but the girls were a bit more attractive than the used and worn out women in CJs. The expat crowd is also a bit younger than CJs, but still middle aged men who looked like kids in a candy shop. The girls are not that attractive except a very few. We went to Malio Club after this and it was MUCH MUCH better. Much more entertaining and the girls are 10x more attractive. Why in the world would you go anywhere else? The bar scene in Jakarta is all commercial anyway. -K

ReplyDeleteI am an Indonesian lady. I stay at Shangri-la hotel last month at Shangrila hotel in horizon club, bit expensive but worthed. I love hotel bar, it so convenience to me,I dont have to drive or take taxi to go clubbing. I Love music and I love to dance. So I decided went to B.A.T.S, the band was just ok,the DJ was not to bad. I will be back again next time for sure... now I am in Singapore,stay at Marriott, went to the bar next door (Brix, hyatt) and now at living room marriott just want to enjoy the music and enjoy my life.....

ReplyDeleteHI, I have visited BATS on last Wednesday, I entered at 11.00pm. I have been charged 1.20Rp for entrance with 1 Beer free. I have found Bar was full with lots of Asian and Europeans.
ReplyDeleteDJ was good and tricky, but live band was little boring becz i think it was italian band so dont know what they were singing.
Beer was costly around 90rp with tax anyway service was good. I saw most of girls busy dancing with old White faces....hahahha...I saw in front of me 3 Old Daddys were dancing with young local in a very funny style and that make me enjoying boring Band. Other than this i did not find pretty faces except customer. I can say ladies customer were more pretty than girls from the Bar, becz lots of fatties dancing in awkward style. Yet i spent 2 hours there, and return home without enjoyment.
Overall it is a over expensive Bar with Good food/Service and DJ(not Band) without pretty faces. May not go there unless don't have other choice.
Cover charge 120k with a poor selection of ncluded beverages. Found a spot to check things out and watch the dance floor.

She was playing video games on her phone. An older bule came over and was chatting her up, but she stopped when she saw me. She tried to impress me, but i dont like the women who r 100% about maximizing their monthly monetary intake.
A "regular" girl (with a real job), wearing a classy and interesting outfit caught my eye....she was definitely interested in me....so i started talking to her....the ayam was surprised, i am sure.
Some bule women there, some ayams and some regular girls.
The band was probably the one, mentioned earlier, from
Quebec. Theybwere OK. The DJ was a lot better.
The dance floor is small, but there were a decent number of people dancing. I am all about dancing the night away.
Overall, BATS was ggod....to improve they could get an average Fillipino band and then have better live music than anyplace in Jakarta....iam spoiled by the Filipino bands in HKG.
hahaha.. this is awesome! please be nice with the comments guys.. they could be a prostitute and could be also same like you guys.. just looking for fun,nice drink , great dancing and awesome sex.. right? keep the fun going.. \m/ ... oh btw, there are so much cool places in jakarta where you can be more civil and chillin.. without being to drunk and think about banging indonesian women though.. , your society.. your identity... ! ;)

ReplyDeleteI was in Jakarta during Ramadan. Everything was open. Went to Red Square...it is VERY small, and no one was there. Left for BATS and LOTS of people there. I was early enough to Red Square that they let me in for free...started charging cover at some later time.

ReplyDeleteWent to bats a couple of nights ago; hadn't been there in 3 years. Good fun. Prices for "fun" have gone up a bit, but still good value. Took a slightly chubby, but very cute girl back to the room for less than 100 USD, and she even spoke greek for free!

Went there last night. Great crowd as ever. Nice mix of expats and young Indonesian women. Prices (for everything) slightly higher than what it used to be 3 years go, when I went there last, but still a bargain :)

Yeah many ladies bar at BATS are so aggresive when they looking at foreign men... they trick, tried to stand up beside u, some of them w/friends, then tried to talk with you with messy english, wishes you will buy her some beers and if he interested they will grab you till you bring her up to the room...their rate were also not cheap either....better to just get high quality girls from http://jakartaescortservice.com/ , price is reasonable, girls are screened out & got regular health checkup

DeleteWas there 2 months ago in August. Excellent band from the U.S. but one of their female singers wasn't up to par with the rest of the group. She looked Hispanic and was probably a sub that night. Otherwise amazing talent and friendly ladies in the bar. I danced all night!

Girls to choose the color from 500,000 to Rp 1,500,000. per night plus hotel of course. All the girls to know that is their job. There is always such a hit on what can you spin in bed. I just sometimes suck and lose money. Girls well observe and catch fresh fish fry awsze not young. For them it does not matter the age of just money. Bartenders sometimes deceive another minus. There's a woman behind the bar and it's ok. I believe that the climate is better than the CJs club because there's more exclusive girls only in appearance, and certainly no cheaper. Remember here you can not fall in love with a woman of club. How do you do after you. How do you find a girl to meet her later closing in Top Gun or My Bar on the Block M for half the price hi hi. These are the bars last chance ha ha ha. Greetings from Polish guys they have tremendous power. Have fun and do not conquers rates because they want to come back yet.

I think the best time to enjoy there is over 11PM. No people 9~10PM. I don't recommend guys 20's ans 30's. Good for over 40's or 50's

ReplyDeleteI was down BATS on 25 and 26 February. Wonderful place and very friendly staff (and at the hotel as well). Lots of girls in the place...like to offer threesome. Which I took up on the first night! Second night just one girl, who was very nice and we clicked quiet well.... I should know better by now. Now will have to arrange a mother business trip to get over there! Nice escape from Singapore. Would highly recommend it
