The annual Jakarta Theatre Festival was created in 1974 to promote Jakarta’s burgeoning amateur theatre scene. For a long time, under the Soeharto regime, it was used as a tool for the government to retain control over the artists. This is no longer the case since the organization of the festival has been transferred to the Jakarta Art Council (Dewan Kesenian Jakarta – DKJ) whose members are cultural and intellectual personalities of Indonesia. Because of a lack of funding, and because the attendance of the festival is low, its existence is currently threatened.
The 2009 Edition was held at the Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM) cultural center from December 13 to 24.
