Lucy In The Sky (Bar & Restaurant)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Update Dec 2016: Lucy has been renovated due to noise complaints from neighbors. It is now covered by a large glass building (as in the first photo above). It looks more upmarket than before but it is still popular with the same crowd (young, trendy Jakartans).

Located near Jalan Sudirman, in Fairgrounds (ex-Bengkel), Lucy In The Sky  is a rooftop restaurant/bar with an open-air garden terrace and a laid-back, close-to-nature atmosphere. It is probably partially owned by Tommy Winata, the ex owner of Bengkel and owner of the land of SCBD.

The location of LITS is probably its best assets as it gives the feeling of escaping the city. Though in the heart of Jakarta's business district, it is surrounded with plants and flowers, which makes it relaxing, and a perfect spot to look at the skyscrapers around. Similar ambiance than SHY Rooftop but less expensive (80k for main dish) and with a better view.

Regarding the taste of the food though, there is still large room for improvement. For now, I advise you to stick with the drinks.

Lucy is one of the most crowded bars in Jakarta, even on week days (starting Wednesday). Most customers are young and chic. You have about 5-10% of foreigners as well. Every 1st Thursday of the month, they have a great hip hop party called In Effect. You can see more information about it here: In Effect Jakarta.

Surprisingly, there is a karaoke ++ attached to Lucy in the Sky with sexy lady companions. It is called Roxy.
Opening hours:
Everyday from 3.30pm to 1am (2am during the weekend)

Old City Nightclub and Karaoke (Jakarta)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Old City is a nightclub and karaoke located in North Jakarta, about 200 meters from the Fatahillah Museum and 500 meters from Colosseum.

I had already visited it in 2009 when it was called Athena and to be honest it hasn't changed much. It is a hardcore party spot with deafening techno music, a dark vibe and drugs aplenty. It is a bit dodgy, especially the surroundings, and you may bump into a few weird customers, but it is still safe to visit.

There is only one main room which is quite big and decorated with a classic Roman style. The karaoke is rather old but it is affordable. It has lady companions and the waiters probably sell more ecstasy than beer.

I saw some flyers about sexy dancers and topless female DJs but they didn't seem to be updated and I'm not sure the events still happen today.

While I would not have recommended this place a few months ago, I would say it could be an alternative to the now-defunct Mille's. If only they could have more Western music it would be perfect as an after hour underground nightclub.

Opening Hours:
Everyday until 6AM (according to the security guard who told me)

Wu Bar & Club (PIK - Jakarta)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Wu is a bar and nightclub located in North Jakarta. Opened recently, it is one of the few proper nightlife venues in PIK (see my review PIK Nightlife), a trendy area among young and affluent Indochinese.

Wu is actually more of a lounge where most people sit down and drink until they get so drunk they start dancing. It is better to come with a group as you are very unlikely to meet anyone if you are by yourself (unless you get invited to a table). They also serve shisha.

The current schedule is the following:
- Old school music, rap and Rn'B on Monday
- Acoustic nights on Tuesday
- Ladies' night on Wednesday (girls get free shots if they come before 11pm)
- Trap, hip-hop and Rn'b nights on Thursday
- Live music followed by DJ on Friday and Saturday
- Progressive, house and trance DJ on Sunday

Overall: Recommended if you are under 25, staying in Pantai Indah Kapuk, and part of a group.

Every day from 7pm to 4am

Chamber Whisky and Wine Bar (Pacific Place)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Chamber is a whisky/wine bar and restaurant squeezed between Potato Head and Cork&Screw in Pacific Place mall. It replaces Capocaccia.

It is intimate and comfortable, with an outdoor and an indoor area. The design follows the current 1930s vintage trend that you can see in several speakeasy bars in Jakarta. It is a bit over the top for my taste. They target rich Indonesians by advertising a large collection of wines and spirits. Most items can only be ordered by bottle so avoid if you come alone.

The food is quite disappointing. It is expensive (10$ for a Nasi Campur or Spaghetti) and yet I don't feel they put a lot of effort into it. Most dishes are actually Indonesian, which does not really match with the theme of the restaurant. This may be due to the fact that their kitchen is small.

Overall: I think that Chamber is not on par with the competition in Pacific Place. While the design is nice, it seems to be lacking substance compared to nearby Paul, Cork&Screw and Potato Head.

Branché (Senopati)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
This is a really late post. I had visited Branché a few days after it had opened a couple years ago (2014) and I had never published my draft review until now.

At the time of my visit, I had met with the owner, a nice, young guy who seemed surprised by the sudden success of his bar. Even though Branché is simple compared to nearby trendy venues in Senopati, it is still quite popular with Indonesians.

My guess is that they enjoy the no-frill atmosphere, the cheaper prices and the young crowd. The bar/restaurant is built on several stories. The top floor is the nicest, with large bay windows and comfortable sofas. There is a French-inspired menu but the quality is disappointing. Expect to pay around Rp250,000 for a meal and an alcohol drink.

Overall: Nothing really special but you may enjoy Branché if you are young and you only need a simple place to drink with friends. Ladies' night on Wednesdays with free flow special cocktails for girls.

Kila Kila by Akasya (Indonesian Restaurant)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Kila Kila is a brand new rooftop restaurant serving fine dining Indonesian cuisine. It is located not far from Pacific Place Mall and offers a beautiful view over SCBD.

It is managed by Akasya Catering, a famous company owned by Enny Latief. They provided the food for numerous VIP events such as the wedding of Edhie Baskoro, the son of SBY. If their food is good enough for the president of Indonesia, it should be good enough for you too.

You can get more information about their concept, menu, prices and design on their websites and social media accounts listed below.

Gonzo's Tex Mex Restaurant (Jakarta)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Gonzo's is a brand-new restaurant serving Mexican, Texan and Tex-Mex specialties. Its first location is in Lotte Mall Kuningan, slightly hidden behind Ranch Market. It doubles up as the first Margarita bar in Jakarta.

The theme is Mexican but I don't think it was the objective of the owners to recreate Mexico in Jakarta. It is colorful and friendly, yet simple. Gonzo's caters to a mall crowd who needs a fun place for meeting/hanging out. They serve mostly popular dishes like Burritos, Fajitas, Steaks, Tacos, Quesadillas, etc, not fine dining Mexican food (see Full Menu).

As such, they are reasonably-priced, especially if you benefit from one of their promotions (Free Tacos on Monday, Free Burritos on Wednesdays -> see their facebook). Actually, when we visited we were expecting small portions as the prices weren't that high. We ended up with so much food I had to call a friend to help us finish.
That's what you get for less than Rp200,000 in Gonzo's!
We tried the burritos, tacos, quesadillas and enchiladas. The taste was great, just as good as any of the most famous Mexican restaurants in Jakarta. I regret we didn't go for one of their grilled meat "Texas favorites" though. I also recommend you their Margaritas, you get 1 free for each you buy from 5pm to 8pm.

Gonzo's is right next to the new bar/club Revolution too so it's a good place to go to for pre-party snacks and drinks.

King of Kebab (Best Kebab in Jakarta)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
King of Kebab claims to be the only authentic kebab in town and they are not lying! They have a tiny location on Jalan Gunawarman, just in front of Holy Crab, where you will probably meet the owner, a Palestinian who worked in Australia and Singapore.

He prepares the sauces himself and imports the beef from Australia. The kebabs are not so big but the prices are low (Rp38,000 for one).

It is very convenient for an after party craving as they stay open late. You can park your car easily, order from go-jek, or eat on the spot in one of the few tables provided.

Savanna Rooftop Bar and Restaurant (Kelapa Gading)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Savanna is a brand new rooftop bar and restaurant that opened in Kelapa Gading in March 2016. It is one of the nicest venues in the area to have a drink.

It seems one of the owners is Dada Hartoto Hardikusumo, an heir to the shipping company Andhika Lines. She was the Chef of Moya's Spanish Restaurant and she was also involved in other Spanish venues (Gusto in Epicentrum and Que Rico Hamburguesa in Kemang).

They have regular events such as live music and DJs. Friday night is Rn'B, otherwise it's more house and EDM. They also have stand up comedians on Saturday.

Basque Spanish Restaurant and Tapas Bar (Jakarta)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Basque is one of the most happening new restaurants/bars to open so far this year in Jakarta. It is a Spanish restaurant / Tapas bar with a great design, good food and a trendy feel.

Currently, I see that more and more expats are hanging out there instead of Loewy. It is a good pick-up place for girls also.

The location on the 8th floor of Noble House offers a nice view on the surrounding buildings of Mega Kuningan. The food is not so expensive, you can get a decent meal for less than Rp200,000.

It is open every day for lunch and dinner. After 11pm, they generally turn up the volume and it turns into a bar. The music is a mix of popular songs from the past 20 years.

Nuage (Whiz Prime, Kelapa Gading, Jakarta)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Nuage is the bar of the Whiz Prime Hotel in Kelapa Gading. It is in the same location as Level 5 karaoke and Portable Kitchen and Lounge. It is rather basic, with cheap chairs and cabanas around a large swimming pool. It is technically a rooftop bar, but only on the third floor of the building so don't expect a spectacular view.

The whole complex is owned by the infamous Stadium group (Malioboro, King Cross, Exodus, Nebula). Yet, there is nothing really kinky going on in Nuage. This might explain why the place is not so busy compared to the other ones.

In spite of being quiet, they have enough budget to pay a team of resident DJs as well as a regular live band. In general, the DJs will play a mix of Rn'B, EDM and Top 40. Wednesday is 80s and 90s favorites and Friday live acoustic rock. Once in a while they have ex-Stadium DJs. You can get more information about their schedule on their Instagram account below.

Overall: You can check Nuage if you stay nearby, but otherwise it is not really special. It is actually best during the day as you can use their large swimming pool. Free entrance.

Motion Blue (Jazz - Fine Dining Lounge)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Motion Blue is a fine dining restaurant/lounge located in Fairmont Hotel in Jakarta. It was named Cotton Club for a couple months, then changed its name. You can read my review of Cotton Club here.

The concept of Motion Blue is very similar. It is an upmarket venue with live jazz bands or musicians every day. It is even more expensive than Black Cat. The food is nice, with mostly French fusion dishes.

Music charge with first drink free: Rp250,000.

Opening Hours:
Everyday from 9:30am to 10:00pm (until 7.30pm on Sunday and holidays)

The Sexy Pool at 1001 Hotel (Bikini Party)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
The Pool @1001 is a new concept developed by the Alexis Group. It is located in the same building as Colosseum nightclub.

Only male clients are allowed in the pool area, where you have sexy dancers and bikini shows by swimsuit hostesses. You can watch them from private cabanas and you can also invite them to spend time with you.

It is not a totally new concept as it already exists in Malioboro or D'Heaven (among few others). The only difference is that in those places, you will see the girls only once or twice at certain times, on certain days. The Pool @ 1001 promises almost non-stop performances and activities.

A few months ago, a bikini party organized by a group of high school students created a bit of a sh*storm (see article from Jakarta Globe). Maybe this is where they got their idea from.

Pastificio-K Homemade Pasta (Kemang)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Pastificio-K is a tiny pasta bar located in Kemang next to Signature Coffee. Created by the owner of Koi, it serves a wide range of homemade pastas that you can choose directly from the chiller. I counted at least 12 types of pastas such as ravioli, gnocchi, tagliatelle, conchiglie, gigli, rigatoni or maccheroni. It also sells Italian desserts like Tiramisu and Panna Cotta.

The prices are rather low, starting IDR40,000++ for a 100g portion of home made pasta cooked with the sauce of your choice (toppings come with additional cost).

I tried the Conchiglie with Bolognese Sauce. The cooking was al-dente which is not the way I prefer but I should have asked beforehand. It was also a bit too spicy for my liking. Still, I really enjoyed it, especially considering that I paid less than 50,000rp net for it.
Overall: For the price-conscious who don't want to sacrifice quality, Pastificio-K is highly recommended. It is one of the restaurants with the best value-for-money in Kemang.
