Monty's Restaurant and Whisky Bar (Senopati)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Monty's is one of the hippest and most exclusive venues in Jakarta at the moment. The day I visited, you had 1 Ferrari, 1 Lamborghini, 2 Porsches, 2 Jaguars and several nice sports cars parked just in front. That should give you an idea of the crowd.

It was opened by Klabo, the same group behind Nip & Dram and Ivy Kitchen. From what I've heard, the owner of Blue Bird Taxis is one of the shareholders.

The Restaurant
On the first two floors is a restaurant serving classic European food. They have all the priciest ingredients that you can possibly import in Indonesia such as caviar, lobster, truffle, charcuterie, cheese or wagyu beef. There also serve several organic and healthy dishes.

The kitchen is headed by a Norwegian expat who previously worked in Grand Hyatt as an executive sous-chef. The price is rather expensive: On average for a 2-course meal you'll spend at least Rp500,000 (without alcohol). You can try it for lunch as they have a 2-course set menu for a little less than Rp300,000 net. Unfortunately it's the price for decent food in this area of Jakarta.

The Lounge
On the third floor, you have a "secret" speakeasy lounge / whisky bar with very dim lighting and chic ambiance. You should really make a reservation in advance as it is fully-booked most of the time. They have live bands from Wednesday to Saturday playing covers of famous pop songs. Wednesday is the busiest and most-recommended night.

It has a capacity of around 60 people. You have to spend at least 5M rupiah to get a sofa (10 pax) or 3,5M rupiah to get a table (4 pax). If you want to drink by the glass, you need to sit by the bar but the available space is scarce and they might not let you in if it's full.

I think that this is the kind of place where either you have the money and you book a sofa, or you don't have it and you just go somewhere else.

If you want to network among the Indonesian elite, I advise you to spend a few nights in the whisky bar. People all seem to know each other and they are pretty relaxed, easy to talk to. Quite many girls as well. Large collection of expensive whiskies. If you are Muslim, beware because the bar only serves alcohol drinks.

They also have a Champagne-themed Sunday brunch.

Proof (Senayan Golf Course - Jakarta)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Proof is a high-end lounge located in the main building of the Senayan Golf Club, about 200m after Senayan City and on the opposite side of Plaza Senayan.

I visited on a Friday night and it was full with a wealthy crowd. I recognized several socialites and at least one heir from one of Indonesia's richest families. There was also a Rolls Royce and a Lamborghini parked outside if you need a better idea of who goes there. People were almost all between 30-50 except for  a few very hot-looking girls in their early 20s.

The entrance is similar to that of Hemingway lounge in Senopati: The bar is hidden behind a glass door located inside a tailor shop. I give them an F for originality.

Designed by Alex Bayusaputro, the interior is elegant but not really spectacular. Basically it looks like the lobby lounge of a any 5-star hotel, nothing more. The leather sofas are very comfortable if you manage to get one (advance reservation is advised). The best place to sit is probably the outdoor area with a view on the golf course, but it was reserved by a group that day so I couldn't see it very well.

The service was poor: The waiters were focusing almost exclusively on the large tables and they were ignoring the rest of the crowd. I actually didn't manage to get a drink and that the main reason I left after 30 minutes. The prices were high but still OK for Jakarta: Grand Marnier was Rp100,000++ and premium cocktails Rp150,000++. They also serve some food but I didn't try it.

There is a live band on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. They usually play jazzy or soul tunes. You also have a DJ on Wednesdays.

Proof is happening at the moment because it is where rich Indonesians meet and socialize. For an expat, it can be an interesting place to visit but you must book a table and buy a few bottles to make sure you fit with the rest of the crowd. I would not recommend going there alone.

Motion Blue (Jazz - Fine Dining Lounge)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Motion Blue is a fine dining restaurant/lounge located in Fairmont Hotel in Jakarta. It was named Cotton Club for a couple months, then changed its name. You can read my review of Cotton Club here.

The concept of Motion Blue is very similar. It is an upmarket venue with live jazz bands or musicians every day. It is even more expensive than Black Cat. The food is nice, with mostly French fusion dishes.

Music charge with first drink free: Rp250,000.

Opening Hours:
Everyday from 9:30am to 10:00pm (until 7.30pm on Sunday and holidays)

The Sexy Pool at 1001 Hotel (Bikini Party)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
The Pool @1001 is a new concept developed by the Alexis Group. It is located in the same building as Colosseum nightclub.

Only male clients are allowed in the pool area, where you have sexy dancers and bikini shows by swimsuit hostesses. You can watch them from private cabanas and you can also invite them to spend time with you.

It is not a totally new concept as it already exists in Malioboro or D'Heaven (among few others). The only difference is that in those places, you will see the girls only once or twice at certain times, on certain days. The Pool @ 1001 promises almost non-stop performances and activities.

A few months ago, a bikini party organized by a group of high school students created a bit of a sh*storm (see article from Jakarta Globe). Maybe this is where they got their idea from.

Cotton Club Jakarta (Jazz and Fine Dining)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Update October 2015: Cotton Club has been replaced with Motion Blue.

The Cotton Club Jakarta is a new jazz club and fine dining restaurant located in the Fairmont Hotel in Senayan. It is managed by the same group behind the Blue Note and the Cotton Club in Tokyo, both among the best venues in the city to listen to jazz, soul, or latin music live bands.

I don't think they can offer the exact same experience as it will be much harder to attract the best international jazz performers in Jakarta. Still, it has the potential of becoming a nightlife hotspot for an older type of clientele.

It will compete with nearby Black Cat in Senayan Arcadia, but also with a bunch of new upmarket lounges that have opened recently like Artoz, Hemingway or Nip And Dram.

Dream Ultralounge (Plaza Indonesia, Jakarta)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Dream Ultralounge is a luxury club, restaurant and lounge who had its soft opening in February 2015. It is part of the revamping of the restaurant Moovina, which has been split in several venues, namely Wine Connection and Dream on its upper floor.

Located in Plaza Indonesia, arguably the most prestigious mall in Jakarta, Dream is the counterpart of the Ego Ultralounge/X2 in Plaza Senayan. It is targeting a similar crowd of wealthy Indonesian executives and expats who don't mind spending a few millions a night to entertain themselves. As it is still new, it has not been ruined yet by the tourists and the ayam as Ego/X2 did already a few years ago.

I find their motto "F*ck Water, Drink Champage" to be quite inappropriate considering the situation of Indonesia but it will give you an idea of the mindset of the people inside. If your budget is just a few hundred thousand rupiah and if you don't like wearing high heels, you may want to avoid it.
They have a live acoustic band every evening, followed by a DJ. They promise to bring a guest DJ every Saturday and to hold a themed event every Friday. They also have model fashion shows regularly.
Overall: Even though it is a bit pompous, I still recommend you to visit Dream because of its central location, its décor and its exclusive feel. Depending the evening, the music can be quite good as well. It is also more suitable for 30+ clubbers.

Artoz Whisky and Cognac Bar (Jakarta)

By Thibaud (Jakarta100bars) →
Artoz is a whisky bar/lounge located in the Energy Building in SCBD. It replaced Marley's Bar which closed down a while ago.

It claims to be the largest collection of Whisky and Cognac in Jakarta, but I am not sure it is true as I believe there is quite an extensive spirit menu in Nip & Dram as well.

I visited Artoz during Ramadan, probably not the best time to do so and unsurprisingly it was empty. Artoz is similar with Nip and Dram actually, both in terms of concept, size and setting: You have comfortable leather sofas and chairs spread across a windowless room, with a bar on on side and a live music stage on the other one. The main difference I saw is that Artoz is not as dark and it seems they don't have those crazy minimum spend amounts.

The prices are pretty steep still, about USD15 for a standard cocktail. You are also given the menu of the French Restaurant Amuz, which belong to the same person (Chef Gilles Marx, also behind Auroz).

They have weekly Jazz live music, currently every Wednesday. It is best to make sure about the schedule on their facebook page here: Artoz Bar Jakarta.

Overall: I can see three kinds of people who would enjoy Artoz: Whisky and Cognac enthusiasts, Jazz lovers, and people who want to have a quiet and upscale drink in the SCBD area. If you are looking for a hip, busy place, it is best you go to Potato Head instead.
